Important Thing #2: The Prescreening Process
After the information meeting, you are going to start the prescreening process. The prescreening process will involve you filling out a lot of paperwork about yourself and your family. The state will need to run background checks on you, check your references, and get your fingerprints to run criminal checks on you.
Important Thing #3: Training Is Required
You can't just become a foster parent just because you got through the prescreening process. You are going to need to complete training to move on with the process. This training may be in-class training or online training, depending on the exact setup in your state. You will have to do reading and homework to help ensure that you are learning the information correctly.
Important Thing #4: Second Interview
After you finish the training, you will meet with a state worker who will collect the homework you did from the training. They are going to review this information and make sure that you learned what you needed to. This is where you will get more information about how the actual foster care process works.

At this point, you will move forward with the final part of the foster licensing process. You will have to fill out more paperwork that will get more into the philosophy of your family structure. The process of being a foster parent is not going to happen overnight. It can take several months to complete before you become approved to be a foster parent.
